Bees Provide Alterative Medical Opportunities
While most folks think of bees as either stinging insects or makers of honey, they are also providers of multiple medical treatment sources.
Apitherapy is a branch of alternative medicine that uses honey bee products for a variety of treatments including honey, pollen, propolis, royal jelly and bee venom.
Ferhat Ozturk teaches Biomedical Sciences at the School of Science and Technology in San Antonio. He will be sharing his research into Apitherapy at the 15th Annual Beekeeping School in Brenham on March 1.
Bee Sting Therapy has been used to treat MS and Lyme disease. Honey is an anti-bacterial that can treat wounds and can help with allergies. Propolis, which is tree sap that bees gather to seal their hives, can make a tincture that has microbial and antiseptic properties.
Bees wax can be used to make lip balm and in salves. Royal jelly is a nutrient rich compound that is fed to queen bees and may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Pollen collected by bees is 40% protein and is considered to be a “superfood” by many.
These and other topics will be available at the 15th Annual Beekeepers School to be held on March 1, 2023 in Brenham, Texas.
